SCB has been holding rehearsals over the last few months every two weeks, but we began weekly rehearsals on May 12th. This first rehearsal was very good and we accomplished a lot. A lot of new people were in attendance. The next rehearsal is on May 19th at 7:00pm at Lincoln High School. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend the remaining rehearsals. And remember to bring a friend!
Here is a new look for the SCB website. It’s still under construction so not everything is exactly how we want it, so if you see something to add, change or whatever feel free to drop us a line at shinnstonband@aol.com. Thanks to Jason McIntyre for the new design.
Rehearsals are underway for the band’s 12th Annual Christmas Concert to be held at the Lighthouse in Shinnston on December 6th. For our members, please follow the link on the left “PRACTICE” to listen to audio of several of the songs we will be performing. Remember, there are only 4 rehearsals left. Please plan to attend all remaining rehearsals.
As always…BRING A FRIEND TO REHEARSAL.!!
Evan Jones, President of SCB, received an email from Mayor Sammy DeMarco of the City of Shinnston. Below is the text of this email. Everyone associated with SCB should be extremely proud to be held in such high regard with the City Administration.

The Shinnston Community Band
July 3, 2008
Dear Evan,
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you and the members of the Shinnston Community Band for sharing your talents in providing a wonderful evening for the citizens of the Shinnston area on July 1 at the Shinnston City Park. The Shinnston Community Band is a great asset for the city and provides us an opportunity to help obtain our goals. Recently the Blueprint Community team set goals and the city has adopted these goals. As you can see with the list of goals below this event touches all of our goals and thus aides the City in trying to fulfill its mission:
Goal #1. To improve the health and well-being of the residents of Shinnston.
Goal #2. To increase the skills, knowledge and ability of Shinnston residents to engage in community development activities.
Goal #3. To improve relationships and communications among Shinnston’s key stakeholders. Goal #4. To increase social capital by building relationships and strengthening the community’s capacity to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate collaborative efforts.
Goal #5. To increase cultural and recreational assets to improve the quality of life for residents of Shinnston.
Goal #6. To increase investments in community resources and infrastructure.
Goal #7. To improve the ecosystem of the Shinnston Community.
Again, please pass on to your members that the City of Shinnston is proud of them and we thank them for a job well done. The signs the City has placed on the entrances to town stating “The Home of the Shinnston Community Band” really shows our feelings on how proud we are of this group of fine musicians. Again, the City thanks you and your members for a job well done!!!!!!!!!!
Mayor Sammy J. DeMarco

The 8th Annual Independence Day Concert and Fireworks was again an unqualified success! We were extremely pleased that the weather was perfect for a night full of music, fun, and of course…FIREWORKS ! The evening began with one of our own members, Kelsey Jeffries, performing her solo act. Kelsey is a talented singer/musician who pleased the crowd with her energetic performance. Next up was the Dennis McClung Blues Band. This local band has a passion for the blues second to none. After a brief intermission the Shinnston Community Band took the stage to a large, enthusiastic crowd. Of course, songs of America was the theme, as several traditional patriotic tunes were combined with an eclectic mix of rock, pop, and swing. Once again the evening concluded with an impressive fireworks display! Thanks to the Shinnston Area Development Association for their generous contribution to this great community evening. Don’t forget that our next rehearsal is to be held on Tuesday, July 15 at 7:00pm at Lincoln High School. As always…BRING A FRIEND TO REHEARSAL.
The SCB Officers and committee members met at the Shinnston City Government Offices on January 22, 2008 to discuss a wide variety of topics including the rehearsal schedule for the upcoming Summer Concert season. Rehearsals begin February 19th at 7:00pm at the Lincoln High School bandroom, and will continue once or twice each month until weekly rehearsals begin in May.
Did you notice the new signs as you enter the city on each end of Route 19 and on Saltwell Road that announce “the Home of the Shinnston Community Band.” !!! Thanks to Norm McDougal of ACE Metal Works in Enterprise for his generous donation to the band and the city. Mr. McDougal is a great supporter of SCB and has donated an enormous amount of time and materials to promote the band. THANK YOU!
One other announcement: The SCB Family Picnic will be held at the Shinnston City Park on June 29th. Swimming at the pool will be free for members and their families. More information will be forthcoming.
See you Tuesday…remember: BRING A FRIEND TO REHEARSAL.
Christmas was in the air once again at the Lighthouse in Shinnston for the Shinnston Community Band’s 11th Annual Christmas Concert. As always the band was in the holiday spirit, as was the overflow crowd that filled the building. The evening began with the City of Shinnston’s annual Christmas parade. The kiddies were treated to the appearance of the big man himself—Santa! After the parade the townsfolk made their way to the Lighthouse to hear another fine performance of the band. It was the perfect end to a wonderful Christmas-like evening.
The band will be beginning rehearsals for the summer season sometime in February of ’08. Keep watching your email and this page for more information concerning rehearsals.
If you are interested in joining the band please send an email to shinnstonband@aol.com for more information. For our current members–BRING A FRIEND !!!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from SCB!!!!
Another successful summer concert has come and gone. Once again the band continues to outdo and perform better than ever! The only disappointment comes from only having the one opportunity to play this summer. Plans are in the works to get more opportunity for the band in the coming month
Click here to see photos of the concert. Thanks to Mr. Cale, Mr. Hall, Mr. Way, and of course, all members–who make up SCB. Keep checking your email for information on the next rehearsals.
After a long break, the Shinnston Community Band is gearing up for the summer. A few changes are in store for this session. Bill Way has decided to take a much deserved break from conducting this session. He is still involved in the band and will be playing trumpet. Mike Cale has graciously stepped in to lead us through the summer. Randall Hall has also returned and may be conducting a number or two. Thanks to all for what they do for the band. We all appreciate it!
Also, music will be handled a little differently than in the past. Each section will have a Section Librarian that will be responsible for handing out music to their section. If you need music see your Section Librarian.
Finally (and most importantly), the Independence Day Concert and Fireworks event is scheduled for July 1 at the Shinnston City Park. This is biggest event of the year for the band and the city. Please attempt to make all rehearsals for this concert. Since we’re getting a late start it’s important we all attend as many as possible to put on a quality show.
Remember–BRING A FRIEND!!
The Winter Session of the SCB 10th Anniversary will begin October 3 at Lincoln High School at 7:00pm. There will be no rehearsal on the following Tuesday October 10, but the next week we will begin weekly rehearsals beginning October 17th. Mr. Way has added several new songs to the song list this year so it’s very important that everyone attend every rehearsal.
See you soon, and remember….bring a friend to rehearsal !!!!
